4 Gross (but completely true) Appalachian Trail Facts

Farting – 55% of the total noise created by all Appalachian Trail thru-hikers is produced out their butts.

Chafing – Chafing is a matter of when, not if.  Pile on the Vaseline to prevent your shady acres from looking like Freddy Krueger’s face.

Eating – Spilling food is common practice on the Appalachian Trail.  Throwing food away, is not.  Wipe that mud off your pepperoni and enjoy.

Pooping – The inside of a port-o-potty smells like a lavender factory compared to an Appalachian Trail privy.  Pooping lasts longer than your ability to hold a single breath.

  • Recommendation (something I got from Boy Scouts) for privy use, take something that smells good such as flavored chap-stick or deodorant and rub it on your upper lip just under your nose then you will smell that instead of the foulness of the privy it will only work for a limited time but it is better than nothing.

  • Thanks Greg – I’m going to share this on the Good Badger Facebook page.  Great advice.
